Traditions:

Uruguay has an impressive legacy of artistic and literary traditions, especially for its small size. The contribution of its alternating conquerors and diverse immigrants has resulted in native traditions that integrate this diversity. Uruguay has centuries old remains, fortresses of the colonial era. Its cities have a rich architectural heritage and an impressive number of writers, artists, and musicians.

The Uruguayan people revel in the art of theater as well as many musical and dance traditions. A lot of these have roots in Europe, but have evolved with their own twists of local color whether they involve plays, concerts, exhibitions, or festivals.

Celebrations:

There are a number of festivals in Uruguay that are celebrated by the people of Uruguay with extreme fun and fervor. Some of the well known festivals of Uruguay are:
  • Lemanja Festival of the Goddess of the Sea
  • La Fiesta Patria Gaucha
  • Mardi Gras Carnival and Parade
  • Festival of the Tango Culture
Lemanja Festival of the Goddess of the Sea: This is one of the major festivals in Uruguay that is celebrated on 2nd of February. It is held at the two places of Montevideo and Punta Del Este. This festival witness thousands of ardent devotees gathering on the beaches as an act of reverence to Lemanja and get her blessings. They offer watermelons, candles and flowers to the goddess on this day.

La Fiesta Patria Gaucha: It is celebrated in the second week of March at a place known as Tacuarembo in northern part of Uruguay. The cowboys of Uruguay known as Gauchos attend this festival. People dress in colorful attires and join together in the performance of poetries, dance and folklore music. Competitions take place. Traditional food is cooked in the barbeque style pits.

Mardi Gras Carnival and Parade: This Uruguayan festival is celebrated at Montevideo. Candombe rhythmic music is a major part of this festival. It is held in the first week of February. Las Murgas, small theatrical productions are also organized.

Festival of the Tango Culture: It is held in the week of 24th June. This festival witnesses dance performances and parties. It is a mark of reverence to Carlos Gardel who is considered to be the originator of the Tango.

Alcohol:

18 years is the minimum age limit for consuming alcohol.

Sports and Hobbies:

Some of the popular Uruguay Sports include football, basketball, rugby and tennis. Among these, football is a favorite sport of Uruguay people. Football (soccer) is a national obsession in Uruguay, and the country holds one of the most storied histories in the game. Uruguay first competed at the Olympic Games in 1924 in Paris, where it won the gold medal in football. In 1930 Montevideo’s Centenario stadium hosted the inaugural World Cup, which was won by Uruguay.

In 1950 the country defeated Brazil in Rio de Janeiro to become one of the few teams to win more than one Cup. Uruguay has captured more world titles than any other nation, and its players are recruited around the world.

Other popular spectator sports include basketball, rugby football, boxing, and horse racing, the latter notably at Las Piedras. Tennis, bicycling, and fishing are also widely enjoyed. Basketball Federation of Uruguay has got a great history. One of the notable basketball players of Uruguay is Esteban Batista. It became 6th in the first Olympic Games held in Berlin.

Rugby is another popular sport in Uruguay. Its national team is called Teros. It achieved 15th rank in the World Cup held in Wales in 1999 and also participated in the World Cup of Australia in 2003. Two very eminent players of tennis in Uruguay are Marcelo Filippini and Pablo Cuevas.
